Hackers integrated malware into Steam gaming platform to steal cryptocurrencies

11:40 am, March 17, 2026

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation launched an investigation after detecting malware in a number of computer games on the Steam platform. According to the agency, the attackers used fake projects to spread viruses that infected users' devices.

The FBI urged potential victims to contact the investigation to help determine the extent of the attack. The agency noted that they are trying to identify all users whose computers may have been infected after downloading suspicious games.

The investigation covers several projects, including BlockBlasters, Chemia, Dashverse, DashFPS, Lampy, Lunara, PirateFi, and Tokenova. Some of them, including Chemia and PirateFi, were removed from Steam in the summer of 2025 after malicious code was detected. According to expert analysis, most of these applications stole data related to digital assets.

Steam remains one of the largest platforms for game distribution: in 2025, the service had about 132 million monthly active users and offered more than 117 thousand games. That is why attacks through such platforms are particularly dangerous.

Cybersecurity experts emphasize that such campaigns often target gamers and can spread not only through official games but also through modifications, fan projects, or cheat programs. Previously, cases of infection through unofficial versions of popular games have been recorded, leading to the theft of data and cryptocurrency assets.
