Hackers leaked the code of the Binance cryptocurrency exchange to the network
404 Media reports that highly sensitive cache code, infrastructure diagrams, internal passwords, and other information belonging to the cryptocurrency exchange Binance have been publicly available on GitHub for several months.
For several months, users of the GitHub repository could study the cached schemas of Binance's infrastructure, including data on internal multifactor authentication processes, which were published in an account called Termf.
404 Media said that they first reported the leak to Binance on GitHub on January 5. A representative of the exchange responded by email: «We are aware that there is a person on the web claiming to have confidential Binance information. Our security team has evaluated this claim and confirmed that the data does not look like what we are currently using. Customers can rest assured that their data and assets remain safe.»
Subsequently, Binance changed its mind and stated that the leak of passwords and site code, which could be viewed on GitHub, could still cause «serious financial damage.»
Interestingly, last week Binance managed to force the GitHub repository team to delete the data, insisting that it had violated copyright. So far, there is no public evidence that any attackers have been able to take advantage of the data breach.
On Thursday, February 1, Binance publicly announced that the information posted on GitHub was outdated and unusable. Earlier, Kaiko analysts said that the world’s largest crypto marketplace managed to «reverse the downward trend of the second half of 2023» and restore its share of the cryptocurrency market to pre-crisis levels in two months.
