Hacker, only 22 years old, will spend 116 years behind bars

6:40 pm, January 30, 2023

A representative of the ShinyHunters hacker group, which was engaged in extortion of money from its victims, faces up to 116 years in prison — the attacker is only 22 years old.

As it became known, law enforcement agencies extradited hacker Sebastien Raoul from Morocco to the United States. Like his two accomplices from the ShinyHunters group (also known as Seyzo Kaizen), the attacker is a French citizen.

Raoul is suspected of hacking into protected computers of legal entities to steal confidential corporate information. The group sold stolen data and demanded ransom from its victims. Since the beginning of 2020, ShinyHunters has obtained classified information about more than 60 companies in the United States and other countries. The list of ShinyHunters' victims includes: Tokopedia, Homechef, Chatbooks.com, Microsoft, AT&T, and MeetMindful.

If convicted, Raul faces up to 116 years in prison. The defendant’s lawyer, Philippe Auchaillon, said that the offender was extradited to the United States because «France has abandoned him.» Back in the summer of 2022, Sebastian’s father said that his son denied all charges and claimed that his accounts were used without his knowledge. In addition, Raul’s lawyer stated that the extradition of the defendant to the United States is in fact a life sentence prohibited by Article 3 of the ECHR (European Convention on Human Rights).

In the United States, Raul is charged with nine counts, including

  • conspiracy to commit computer fraud (up to 10 years);
  • conspiracy to commit wire fraud (up to 27 years);
  • fraud with the use of electronic means of communication (up to 20 years).

In late December, it was reported that Сем Бенкман-Фрід" href="https://noworries.media/biography/sem-benkman-frid/" data-bio-id="3697">Sam Bankman-Fried 's partners face up to 160 years in prison. Former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison and FTX co-founder Gary Wang pleaded guilty to 11 charges, including fraud and embezzlement. It is known that Ellison faces up to 110 years in prison, and Wang — 50.
