Hacker from Dnipropetrovs’k stole personal data of more than a million Ukrainians

11:13 am, March 2, 2023

a 19-year-old hacker from Dnipropetrovs’k region created malware to automatically pick passwords to user accounts on various Ukrainian resources. He compiled the data into databases that he sold on hacker forums. This was reported by the National Police.

The principle of operation of the malware was to select passwords using brute force. Thanks to the hacking, the young cybercriminal gained access to user accounts, e-mail, trade, advertising and media resources.

During a search of the offender’s house, the police found information from more than a million accounts of Ukrainian citizens. According to the Criminal Code, the fraudster can be sentenced to 3 to 8 years in prison for such activities.

The suspect was served a notice of suspicion under Part 3 of Art. 361 (Unauthorized interference with the operation of information (automated), electronic communication, information and communication systems, electronic communication networks), Part 1 of Art. 361−1 (Creation for the purpose of unlawful use, distribution or sale of malicious software or hardware, as well as their distribution or sale) Of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The Cyberpolice of Ukraine strongly recommends using complex passwords and two-factor authentication.

Last year, Ukrainian law enforcement officers uncovered more than 600 cases of illegal use of cryptocurrencies. In most cases, criminals used digital assets to trade illegal goods on the darknet or to launder money.
