Hackers tried to sell the passport of the self-proclaimed president of Belarus in the form of NFT

12:13 pm, September 1, 2022

Belarusian programmers claim to have gained access to the passport information of every citizen of Belarus, including self-proclaimed dictator President Alexander Lukashenko. The hacker group Belarusian Cyber Guerrillas says the move is part of a massive fundraising campaign to fight the «bloody regimes in Minsk and Moscow.»

The programmers note that they have hacked into the government database containing the passport information of every Belarusian citizen. In turn, this allowed them to launch a collection of NFTs called Belarisuan Passports. Social media users accused the hackers of falsifying the information, as they believe that Lukashenka’s so-called «passport data» contains banal grammatical errors.

The hackers claimed that they tried to sell the NFT collection on Lukashenko’s birthday, August 30, through the OpenSea marketplace. «It's the dictator’s birthday today — help us spoil it! Special offer — a passport of New Belarus for Lukashenko, where he is behind bars,» they wrote on Twitter.

However, the sale of NFTs on the OpenSea platform was closed almost immediately. A representative of the cryptocurrency marketplace said that the project violated the company’s rules on «disclosing personal identification information of a person without his or her consent.»

«The Belarusian cyber guerrillas also said that they are seeking to sell NFTs containing passport data of other government officials who are closely associated with Lukashenka. «We also offer passports of his closest associates and traitors to the people of #Belarus and #Ukraine. All funds will go to support our work in the fight against the bloody regimes in #Minsk and #Moscow,» the group wrote.
