Hackers tried to deceive Binance partners with the help of deepfake technology
A group of hackers impersonated Patrick Hillmann, Director of Public Relations at cryptocurrency exchange Binance. The attackers made a series of video calls with representatives of cryptocurrency projects, who were promised to assist in listing on the exchange for a fee. The calls were made using a Hillman’s phone and were organized as a Zoom video conference. The scheme was uncovered when Binance partners contacted Hillmann directly to thank him for his «help.»
The Binance top manager did not specify which cryptocurrency projects were attacked and what material damage the hackers caused to the exchange. He also emphasized that the listing process on the exchange does not include third parties, and applications are accepted only through a special form on the official website.
Hillman also warned about the growth of fraud using Binance employees' IP addresses in several popular social networks and messengers: «In addition to this incident, there has been a recent spike in hacker activity impersonating Binance employees and executives on platforms such as Twitter, LinkedIn, Telegram, and more. We are ready to protect our users and our ecosystem.»
