Hackers stole $ 670 million in cryptocurrency in 3 months
The number of attacks on digital assets has doubled compared to the beginning of 2022, but the total amount of losses has decreased.
According to ImmuneFi experts, in April, May, and June, hackers attacked cryptocurrency platforms 50 times. As a result, they managed to steal more than $ 670 million. Interestingly, in the first three months of 2022, hackers stole $ 1.2 billion in only 25 attacks.
In the second quarter, most of the losses were caused by hacks of DeFi protocols, not blockchain bridges, as in January, February, and March. These are the most recent hacks: Beanstalk DeFi protocol ($ 182 million), Harmony network’s Horizon bridge ($ 100 million), Mirror Protocol ($ 90 million), and Fei Protocol ($ 80 million).
Most of the names of the hackers are, of course, unknown, but«traces often lead» to the North Korean group Lazarus Group. According to Elliptic Connect analysts, this hacker group is involved in many crypto thefts. Among them is an attack on the Horizon Bridge of the Harmony blockchain, which resulted in the theft of $ 100 million.
