Hackers use government websites to steal cryptocurrencies from MetaMask crypto wallet holders
Cybercriminals are using the websites of government agencies in several countries to deceive users of MetaMask cryptocurrency wallets. The goal is to steal digital assets.
An investigation by Cointelegraph journalists showed that the official portals of government organizations in Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, India, Vietnam, Nigeria, and Vietnam were attacked by hackers. Phishing links were found everywhere, redirecting MetaMask owners to fake sites. As soon as a user clicked on any of the fraudulent links posted on government websites, they were redirected to a fake MetaMask URL.
The potential victim was then offered to link their crypto wallets to MetaMask, allegedly to gain full access to the services on the platform. Analysts emphasize that linking MetaMask wallets to such websites gives fraudsters full control over assets .
The journalists noted the remarkable similarity between the design of the real and fake MetaMask websites, which was one of the main reasons why crypto asset owners fell for the scams.
We would like to remind you that recently there were rumors that the MetaMask wallet will have its own cryptocurrency. However, the crypto community was suspicious of the news, given that it had previously encountered various rumors on this topic. Thus, on March 31, 2023, unconfirmed information about the planned MetaMask airdrop appeared. Soon after, the project team denied this information on its official Twitter page, claiming that it was fraudsters.
