Hackers steal data and promise to bring down Argentina’s economy
Argentina’s National Securities Commission (CNV) has fallen victim to a cyberattack, allegedly by the Medusa hacker group. The hackers demanded a ransom of $ 500,000 within a week, threatening to leak 1.5 TB of CNV documents and databases.
According to reports, confidential files and records are at risk of leakage, which could potentially bring down Argentina’s financial markets.
The incident was another major attack in Medusa’s list of cyberattacks. The ransomware group recently claimed responsibility for an attack on a major cancer center in Australia, in which hackers demanded a $ 100,000 ransom.
Medusa is the group that leaked the source code of Microsoft Bing and Cortana. According to experts, the leak amounts to about 12 GB and is part of the 37 GB stolen by the Lapsus group in 2022. Microsoft has not provided any comments on the leak, so the credibility of the hackers' claims has not been confirmed.
