Hackers hacked Twitter account of Ethereum founder to steal money

7:34 pm, September 10, 2023

Fraudsters hacked the Twitter account of Ethereum’s co-founder and lured victims with a fake NFT distribution. User losses have already exceeded $ 690,000. The hackers published a post on behalf of Vitalik Buterin, inviting users to take part in a free distribution of non-fungible tokens. The giveaway was allegedly organized in honor of the arrival of a proto-dunkshard known as the EIP-4844 update. The post suggested following the link, connecting your wallet, and picking up a digital collectible.

Among the victims was Ethereum developer Bok Khoo, who lost several tokens from his crypto punk collection and urged his followers not to follow the instructions in Buterin’s post, as his account had been compromised by fraudsters. Earlier, Vitalik’s father, Dmitry Buterin, warned users about the fake tweet, adding that work was already underway to restore access to the account.

A blockchain analyst who uses the pseudonym ZachXBT said that the attackers managed to steal at least $ 691,000 from gullible users. Among the stolen crypto assets are Cryptopunk collectible tokens #3983 and #1751 worth 153.62 ETH and 58.18 ETH, respectively.

Chinese journalist Colin Wu also warned about the hacking of Buterin’s account. Colin Wu recalled that in July, Hayden Adams, the founder of the decentralized exchange Uniswap and a member of the Ethereum Foundation, also lost access to his Twitter account. The journalist suggested that Buterin’s account could have been hacked by the Pink Drainer hacker group.
