Hackers hacked the Twitter of a Big Four company — all to steal cryptocurrency

1:02 pm, September 5, 2022

Cryptocurrency hackers have hacked the Twitter account of the Brazilian office of the international consulting company PwC, a member of the Big Four, with the aim of posting phishing links with an alleged distribution of XRP tokens.

As it became known, on the official Twitter account of PwC Venezuela, the attackers, on behalf of Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse, published a post about a «grand event» where users would be able to receive XRP cryptocurrency for free. The tweet contained a phishing link, which users clicked on and risked losing their cryptocurrency savings by connecting their cryptocurrency wallet.

At the time of writing, the number of victims of this fake token distribution is not known, but PwC Venezuela’s Twitter account has more than 37,000 followers who might be interested in the free cryptocurrency.

At the end of July, a similar situation occurred with the followers of the Twitter account of the famous Korean digital artist and animator Dikey Kwon. The hackers hacked into Dikey Kwon 's page and posted a phishing link to «get exclusive NFTs» on his page, and managed to steal more than $ 150,000. Also in July, hackers gained access to the UK army’s Twitter and YouTube accounts to spread a malware to steal cryptocurrencies. A similar situation occurred with the famous digital artist Beeple, whose Twitter account was hacked in May. On the digital artist’s page, the attacker posted information with a phishing link to a fake raffle in collaboration with Louis Vuitton.
