Illegal cryptocurrency transfers will now be tracked by Ukrainian police

10:22 am, September 25, 2023

The Criminal Investigations Division of the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS), along with international law enforcement, has conducted a training for Ukrainian police officers to teach them how to track illegal crypto transactions.

The IRS has joined forces with the Netherlands Fiscal Information and Investigation Service (FIOD) and HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to help Ukrainian police officers fight cybercriminals more effectively. The initiative was joined by analytical companies CipherTrace, BlockTrace, and Chainalysis, which spoke about the intricacies of tracking cryptocurrency transactions in blockchains.

The training seminars were held on September 18−21 with the participation of 40 employees of the Cyber Police Department of the National Police of Ukraine, the Bureau of Economic Security, the Security Service of Ukraine, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau, and the National Bureau of Investigation. They discussed tools for combating money laundering, analyzing suspicious cryptocurrency transactions, and using blockchains for forensic examinations.

In May, Ukrainian law enforcement officers already participated in a similar educational program, the results of which were recognized as successful. After completing the training and passing the exam, the participants received a special certificate of completion.

«It is useful for government agencies to cooperate with private companies on an international level. We are helping the Ukrainian police reduce the number of violators who evade sanctions ,» said Jim Lee, head of the Criminal Investigations Division of the US Internal Revenue Service.

In early August, it became known that Ukrainian crypto exchanges had underpaid at least â‚´3 billion (over $ 80 million) in taxes to the state treasury. According to a statement by the Bureau of Economic Security of Ukraine, trading platforms created by Ukrainian citizens have earned $ 55 billion since 2013. At the same time, the figure stated by the BES only covers transactions with BTC, ETH, and USDT. It is unclear how the trading volume was calculated.
