Paintings on destroyed infrastructure in Kyiv region turned into cryptocurrency tokens to raise funds to support Ukraine
Ukrainian and American artists are painting the infrastructure destroyed during the Russian invasion in the city of Irpin near Kyiv and selling the illustrations as NFT. The authors say that they want to help rebuild Ukraine after the victory.
The artists chose the sunflower as a symbol of Ukraine. The flowers are depicted on cars that were shot, burned, or simply left in the city. However, residents of Irpin have mixed reactions to the artistic event — some find the installation disturbing, while others welcome the innovative approach to fundraising.
Trek Kelly, an artist from the United States who works in Irpin, says he understands the reaction of the townspeople, but hopes that the project will become a place for reflection. «Yes, there are people who don’t understand us. They think we are dancing on the bones of the dead. We want to show that life goes on. We will win the war and will be able to destroy the enemy. Even with a brush, even with a weapon.»
The owner of one of the destroyed vehicles thanked the artists for making his car «something more beautiful than a pile of rusty scrap.»
«I understand the idea of colors that demonstrate hope for the future. I understand that Ukraine cannot be destroyed, despite everything the Russians tried to do here,» the man says.
After the Russian invasion of Kyiv region, the occupiers killed at least 300 civilians in Irpin alone. The American charitable association Beautify Earth accepts donations for artists who paint destroyed cars. The foundation promises to soon post detailed information on where to buy NFT.
By the way, the artists have already been offered other destroyed cities for art projects. The artists want «bright colors of revival to appear on the ruins and blood.»
