The number of cryptocurrency brands registered in the United States has broken a record

According to the data published by Michael Kondoudis, the U.S. Trademark and Patent Attorney, the number of U.S. trademarks related to cryptocurrencies has exceeded 3,600 (data collected from January 1 to August 31, 2022). Given that the data is presented for only 8 months, it is reasonable to assume that this number will increase by the end of 2022. It is worth noting that in 2021, the total number of applications for cryptocurrency trademarks amounted to 3516.

After a peak in March 2022, when the number of new trademark applications in the United States reached 604, the rush to create cryptocurrency-related trademarks showed a regression by August. In August, only 329 applications for trademark registration were filed. Experts attribute this to the fall of the cryptocurrency market.

As for NFT applications, more than 5,800 trademark applications were filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office in 2022. As in the case of cryptocurrency-related trademarks, the largest number of new applications was made in March (1078), followed by a gradual regression.

Finally, in 2022, more than 4,150 virtual reality trademark applications were filed in the United States. By the way, in 2021, there were only 1866 such applications.

Michael Condidus notes that the interest in metaverse has increased significantly when they have the option of investing in virtual property — buying and selling land plots, such as in the Decentraland metaverse. In early August, the first virtual ATM was launched in the metaverse. The purpose of the innovation is to make Web3 transactions as similar as possible to the usual payments through real ATMs in order to simplify the adaptation of newcomers who have started exploring metaverse but do not yet have sufficient knowledge of cryptocurrencies.
