The number of virtual universes is approaching 150

11:47 am, December 4, 2022

Experts from the consulting firm Metaversed have calculated the number of existing metaverse. Summarizing the results of the fourth quarter of this year, they reported that they had discovered 148 virtual worlds. According to analysts, most projects are based on Web2. Among them, the top 3 are Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite. These gaming metaversions attract millions of users around the world.

Web3 projects are in less demand, but their number significantly exceeds the number of Web2 virtual worlds. In this sector, the top three projects in terms of traffic are: Axie Infinity, Upland, and NFTWorlds. None of them has surpassed the one million user mark.

Representatives of the gaming industry are skeptical about metaverse. Many believe that such virtual worlds are no different from regular computer games (they show the same skepticism towards NFTs). The head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, once spoke out on this issue, saying that modern metaverse is most similar to a cheap video game. However, many would agree with his words.

Metaverse was named the main threat of the next year: in 2023, hackers will actively use them to steal cryptocurrencies and other financial assets from their victims. However, sometimes it comes to curiosities — the EU recently spent almost 400,000 euros on a virtual party attended by 6 people. This is probably the most expensive event in terms of costs per guest.
