Users of the MetaMask cryptocurrency wallet are warned about a new phishing attack
Halborn cybersecurity experts have warned users of the popular MetaMask cryptocurrency wallet about a large-scale phishing campaign.
As with other similar attacks, hackers send emails to wallet users.
The email looks like an original, genuine message from MetaMask developers — it contains logos and all the necessary attributes.
In the email, the hackers inform users that they need to «identify and verify their wallets.» To do this, they should follow the link. If the user visits the site and confirms the transaction that will be offered to him, the attackers will be able to access the assets in his wallet.
Halborn experts point out the signs of a fake email: the attackers use the domain name metmaks. auction, which has nothing to do with the real developers. The hackers also made several spelling mistakes in the text of the email and used a fake sender’s address.
In addition, the email does not address the user and does not contain his or her wallet address.
MetaMask co-founders Daniel Finlay and Aaron Davis note that phishing attacks have become one of the most serious problems for their core product. As a result of such attacks, people lose millions of dollars.
