Users warned about a new virus that attacks browsers and steals cryptocurrency
Security experts have warned users about a new virus called Mystic Stealer that attacks browsers and steals cryptocurrency. The most popular browsers (including Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Edge) and cryptocurrency wallets are under threat.
The infostealer is currently capable of stealing data from 40 browsers, 70 extensions, and 21 cryptocurrency programs. After infecting a device, Mystic Stealer collects information about the operating system and hardware, and then sends this information to hackers.
Taking into account the data received, the attackers give the software instructions, after which the infostealer starts stealing information stored in certain browsers and programs. In particular, the software copies passwords to cryptocurrency wallets and information for authorization in applications.
Mystic Stealer was spotted by cybersecurity experts back in April 2023. At the end of May, the software authors developed a new version of the infostealer and started advertising it on forums. They offer anyone who wants to use the trojan to sign up for a paid subscription worth $ 150 per month.
The first reports about Mystic Stealer appeared on Russian-language websites, so Russians are most likely behind the development of the malware.
As a reminder, in late April, it became known about a new malware for stealing information from macOS devices called Atomic (also known as AMOS), which is actively distributed through private Telegram channels for a subscription of $ 1,000 per month.
The malicious program supports more than 50 different browser extensions for cryptocurrency management. Cybercriminals who have paid for a subscription to the virus also receive a ready-made web panel for easy victim management, the ability to upload stolen data to Telegram, and much, much more.
