Every third member of the US Congress received cryptocurrency from Sam Bankman-Fried
According to CoinDesk journalists, 196 out of 535 newly elected US Congressional senators received money from FTX founder Сем Бенкман-Фрід" href="https://noworries.media/biography/sem-benkman-frid/" data-bio-id="3697">Sam Bankman-Fried. Accordingly, one in three US congressmen has enlisted the support of a cryptocurrency fraudster who sponsored the election campaign at the expense of investors.
Speaking to journalists, most lawmakers assured that they had already donated the funds to charitable organizations. Some also said that they had decided to set aside the money until a fund is set up to compensate FTX investors for their financial losses.
A California state representative named Lou Correa was among the members of Congress who accepted funds from FTX. According to the senator, he received $ 2900 from Bankman-Fried, but Correa has never spoken to SBF personally. «I do not know this man, I have never met him personally,» the congressman said and promised to donate the money to support the University of California’s educational foundation.
It should be reminded that donations from Sam Bankman-Fried and FTX became known in early November — more than $ 70 million from the exchange to political campaigns during the 2021/2022 US election cycle and $ 40 million from Fried personally to sponsor Democratic campaigns during the 2022 midterm elections.
FTX’s collapse occurred immediately after the midterm elections to the Senate, which raised a number of suspicions about the external financing of political party funds. Federal regulators and law enforcement agencies stated that they «faced a conflict of interest in identifying, investigating, and disrupting the Sam Bankman-Fried fraudulent scheme.»
