Cryptocurrency wallet linked to Nomad Bridge exploit uses Tornado Cash cryptomixer
A cryptocurrency wallet linked to the Nomad Bridge exploit transferred $ 1.57 million (over 1200 ETH) to the rogue cryptomixer Tornado Cash. Blockchain security company CertiK suggests that the attackers want to convert 1200 ETH into cash. In total, the hackers made 12 transactions of 100 ETH each.
The Nomad Bridge hack is considered one of the ten largest crypto hacks of 2022. As a result of the exploit, $ 190 million in cryptocurrency was lost, and the attackers left only $ 651 behind.
Thanks to the attack, hackers managed to steal not only BTC and ETH, but also USDC and Dai stablecoins, tokens of Frax, GeroWallet, and Card Starter projects. The Nomad Bridge exploit was different from many similar cyberattacks: funds were sent through the bridge to hundreds of cryptocurrency wallets.
In exchange for the stolen funds, the management of the cryptocurrency startup offered the hackers a reward in the form of NFTs — 100 non-fungible tokens worth $ 27 each. Given the scale of the theft, the hackers were not interested in the $ 2700 reward in NFTs.
In addition to the Nomad Bridge token hack, the largest crypto hacks of 2022 were recognized as
- the hacker attack of the North Korean Lazarus Group on Ronin Network — $ 625 million was stolen
- hacking of the FTX crypto exchange — $ 400 million was stolen
- mango Markets exploit — $ 115 million stolen
- bNB Token Hub hack — $ 120 million stolen.
Most of the stolen cryptocurrency went through cryptomixers. Tornado Cash was expected to become the most popular service. Pertsev’s creation has already been involved in a crypto hack in the new year: hackers who stole cryptocurrency from the BTC.com pool owned by BIT Mining Limited used the mixer to launder money. According to X-explore analysts, the attackers managed to earn 32.5 BTC and 1964 ETH, some of which ended up on Tornado Cash.
