Cryptocurrency exchange Binance is looking for a hacker who stole more than $ 570 million

9:10 am, October 25, 2022

The CEO of Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, said that the platform is currently investigating the BNB Smart Chain exploit. According to Changpeng Zhao, Binance’s security team is cooperating with law enforcement agencies to find all those involved.

«So far, law enforcement has given us some clues as to who they think might be behind the attack. So we’re actually narrow ing it down,» Changpeng Zhao told CNBC. The Binance team managed to freeze most of the stolen funds, about 80−90%, so «the actual losses of the exchange were much less than the announced amount

According to independent security researchers from Peckshield, a company known for successfully solving well-known cyberattacks (including those of the Lazarus Group), the hackers used an exploit in the BSC Token Hub cross-chain. As a result, the attackers moved some of the funds to other blockchains, including Ethereum, Fantom, and Arbitrum.

To investigate this and other attacks, Binance’s American division has hired former FBI agent Jay Kahn to head the investigation department. The specialist will be responsible for cooperation with law enforcement agencies, regulators, and trading platforms. Jay Kahn is known for high-profile financial crime cases. In 2006, he focused on insider trading in hedge funds and also dealt with extortion cases, hacker attacks on cryptocurrency and traditional financial corporations. Reuters once called him the «most feared man on Wall Street». Therefore, the cryptocurrency community can expect investigations of the largest crypto crimes in the near future.
