Cryptocurrency exchange FTX started blocking customers through Tornado Cash

10:49 am, August 20, 2022

Representatives of the FTX trading platform announced the innovation after the US authorities imposed sanctions against the Tornado Cash transaction mixing service. The exchange, for example, began blocking users who interacted with the Aztec privacy tool.

Cryptocurrency exchange executives warned customers against using Aztec Connect, Aztec Network, and zk.money. These services are defined as «high-risk» platforms. Users of one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency trading platforms have reported that their access to accounts has been frozen. It also became known that the support service requires some customers to provide documents on the origin of their digital funds and tell about the purpose of transactions.

The cryptocurrency community reacted negatively to the restrictions imposed by FTX. At the same time, many noted that the exchange’s director, Sam Bankman-Fried, had previously said that his platform would strictly comply with all laws. Users emphasized that the desire for privacy should not be criminalized. Moreover, some of the blocked wallets interacted with Aztec products only indirectly.

As a reminder, Coin Center lawyers will appeal the decision of the US authorities to add Tornado Cash to the sanctions list. In their opinion, such a policy contradicts the current constitution of the state and violates the rights of ordinary citizens. A rally will be held in support of the arrested developer.
