Cryptocurrency hackers from Korea attack Israel’s crypto platform for nuclear weapons development

9:26 am, November 9, 2022

According to Israeli cybersecurity experts, hackers from North Korea attempted to steal funds from an Israeli crypto platform. As law enforcement officers found out, the loot was planned to be used to sponsor North Korea’s nuclear program.

The hackers posed as a Japanese tech supplier, but the platform’s security team, whose name has not been disclosed, responded quickly and blocked the hacking attempt. If the cyberattack had been successful, North Korea would have received millions of dollars to build nuclear weapons.

International investigators began to talk about the fact that Pyongyang’s authorities were cooperating with hackers to finance its nuclear program in early October. Meanwhile, in South Korean political circles, politicians are accused of having ties to Virgil Griffith, a former Ethereum developer. Griffith is currently in an American prison, the developer was convicted of helping North Korea evade sanctions.

Official Pyongyang said that the latest missile launch, which caused a strong international response, is a «simulation» of a possible future attack on South Korea. Although the launch did not involve a test use of nuclear weapons, North Korea is expected to conduct its first nuclear test within the next five years. According to South Korean and U.S. intelligence reports, the project is already being funded by stolen cryptocurrencies.

Earlier, we reported that the North Korean hacker group Lazarus Group has started hunting for MacOS users looking for work in the crypto sector. The hackers created fake job ads on the Singaporean cryptocurrency exchange Crypto. com. They sent messages about fake job postings with supposedly real links to people who had posted their resumes to find a job. If the user showed interest and opened the fraudulent link, the hackers infected their computer.
