Cryptocurrency hackers hacked the Korean government’s Youtube impersonating Elon Musk
The YouTube channels of the South Korean government have been attacked by hackers impersonating billionaire Elon Musk, leaving thousands of users at risk.
According to local media reports, cryptocurrency hackers have hacked the YouTube channels of South Korean government agencies: The National Museum of Modern Art and the Korea Tourism Organization. The attackers changed the names of the accounts to «SpaceX Invest» — in this way, the fraudsters tried to convince users that the channels belonged to Elon Musk’s SpaceX company.
According to the standard scheme, the attackers published interviews with Musk and other cryptocurrency supporters to make it more believable. Obviously, the main goal of the fraudsters was to encourage users to click on the phishing link placed in the description. However, the South Korean government responded promptly to the incident and within a few hours, access to the channels was restored and the fraudulent videos were removed.
«Every government organization should check its security system and constantly work on the speed of response to cyberattacks, as there is a high risk of even more hacker attacks,» said Park Tae-hwan, Head of Security at AhnLab.
It should be reminded that a similar situation with the hacking of the South Korean government YouTube channel occurred in early September. Back then, hackers used a deepfake video in which Elon Musk allegedly discussed cryptocurrencies. The illegal use of Elon Musk’s image to promote fraudulent projects has become a common negative phenomenon for the cryptocurrency community. At the end of May, the Tesla CEO reacted to a deepfake video in which he allegedly promotes a fraudulent crypto project. In his tweet, the billionaire stated that he was not promoting any cryptocurrency project. The video, which was actively promoted in May on various platforms, was created to encourage investors to invest in a fraudulent platform that promised a 30% return on crypto deposits.
