Cryptocurrency games accused of neglecting user security

5:27 pm, August 4, 2022

According to a report by the cybersecurity audit company Hacken, cryptocurrency games pose a major security risk to gamers.

According to Hacken representatives, the security measures used in P2E (play2earn) games are unsatisfactory because they «put profit above user security,» which encourages hackers to launch cyberattacks. «GameFi projects, especially P2E ones, do not follow even the most important basic cybersecurity guidelines, leaving numerous entry points for attackers,» Hacken emphasized.

Interestingly, according to Hacken representatives, no P2E game has an insurance «airbag» that could help projects immediately recover funds in the event of a hack and return them to players. Perhaps that’s why Axie Infinity users have been waiting for several months for the return of their money stolen by hackers.

As a reminder, the North Korean hacker group Lazarus Group is suspected of stealing $ 625 million from one of the largest games of the Play2Earn genre — Axie Infinity, which attacked the Ronin sidechain back in March. Sky Mavis Inc. suffered losses of 173,600 ETH and $ 25.5 million — 1/3 of the stolen assets belonged to the company, but more than 100,000 ETH were gaming assets. However, on June 28, after the launch of the updated version of Ronin Wallet, the company began to return the lost funds to depositors.
