Cryptocurrency projects experience 63% more hacker attacks
Immunefi analysts have calculated that in the second quarter of 2023, crypto fraudsters carried out a total of 81 criminal hacks and hacker attacks. The figure increased by 63% compared to the same period last year.
Over the previous three months, the cryptocurrency industry lost approximately $ 265 million: $ 220 million due to hacking, $ 45 million due to other events. The Atomic Wallet cryptocurrency wallet suffered the most, as $ 100 million was stolen as a result of its hacking. Analysts also noted the $ 31.6 million hack of the Fintoch project.
BNB Chain accounted for 44.4% of the incidents, and Ethereum — 32.1%. Out of $ 265 million of stolen funds, only $ 10 million was recovered.
«As cybercriminals continue to expand their malicious activities and use increasingly sophisticated fraud schemes, users should carefully evaluate the projects they are going to invest in,» said Mitchell Amador, CEO of Immunefi.
As a reminder, blockchain projects lost more than $ 320 million in the first three months of 2023. In the first half of the year, Beosin experts estimated the crypto industry’s losses from hacking and fraud at $ 655.6 million.
