Cryptocurrency fraudsters steal digital assets using comments on Youtube

4:31 pm, July 8, 2022

Experts have discovered a new fraudulent scheme using the YouTube platform: attackers leave comments under popular videos advertising a fake crypto exchange.

As it became known, in their comments, fraudsters promise a «profitable» cryptocurrency exchange, «ten times better than on other crypto exchanges.» In order to lure more users, the attackers add responses from bots that have already allegedly used the service under the comments. Users are told that the fake exchanger’s system has a bug with a comma that separates integers and decimal numbers.

The main goal at this stage is to direct gullible users to a separate channel with step-by-step video instructions that «help» victims «make money» on the exchange. Below the video is a link that leads to a fake crypto exchange, and as soon as the user transfers funds for the exchange, they fall into the hands of fraudsters.

«Crypto investors are increasingly being targeted by criminals. The search for victims on YouTube is gaining momentum, so we strongly recommend that digital asset owners carefully check all resources before using them,» said one of the experts who discovered the fraudulent scheme.

It seems that YouTube is becoming a «popular» platform for crypto fraudsters to steal funds. Recently, security experts at Cyble Research Labs have discovered a new crypto virus spreading on YouTube called PennyWise. The virus is aimed at stealing confidential browser data and wallet passphrases and intercepting transactions.
