A cryptocurrency exchange that accidentally sent more than $ 10 million in cryptocurrency to a client has been refunded part of the funds
The story of the Crypto.com cryptocurrency exchange and a «lucky» customer continues — a woman and her husband claim to have taken $ 10.5 million as a gift from the cryptocurrency platform. However, according to law enforcement agencies, about $ 7 million has already been recovered.
Appearing in court on October 11, Tewamanogari Manivel and her husband Jatinder Singh pleaded not guilty to the cryptocurrency theft, emphasizing that they considered the funds received as «winnings from Crypto.com». The Melbourne couple spent almost all of the money, buying 4 houses, several cars, art, furniture, and gifts.
The account to which the funds were sent belonged to Jatinder Singh, but his wife Tewamanogari’s bank accounts were linked to it. The woman started spending the money without even knowing about the bonus she had received. In March, she tried to leave Australia, but was detained by the police.
Thanks to the sale of several properties (the court insisted on this), the couple managed to recover about $ 7 million for Crypto.com. It is not yet known whether Tewamanogari Manivel and Jatinder Singh will be held criminally liable.
As for the reasons for such a large-scale mistake, the Crypto.com representative explained the transfer error by incorrectly entering the data and amount. The main requirement of the judge and the exchange to the couple is to return all funds.
