Cryptocurrency wallet MetaMask has improved protection against phishing attacks
According to Colin Wu, a well-known cryptocurrency journalist, MetaMask crypto wallet has become compatible with SpruceID (also known as Sign In with Ethereum). This is a form of authentication that allows users to access resources on the Internet using their Ethereum account.
SpruceID’s «domain binding» feature will detect signatures/confirmations from malicious URLs. MetaMask hopes to reduce the number of phishing attacks in this way.
As for Spruce, the developers of this startup have created tools for decentralized identification. The project’s products are SpruceID and Kepler. These tools provide data authentication and storage, enabling decentralized access control and interaction between Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 APIs.
Improving protection against phishing attacks is really necessary for MetaMask and its users — in late February, the cryptocurrency wallet’s owners faced phishing emails due to the compromise of the Namecheap domain provider.
In the emails, the fraudsters warned cryptocurrency wallet owners about closing their accounts allegedly due to failure to meet verification requirements. The user was required to complete the verification process through a fraudulent website (kyc.bip-portal[.]info), which looked like the original MetaMask website.
