Cryptocurrency hacker who broke into FTX became one of the largest holders of Ethereum

2:05 pm, November 16, 2022

Just a day after the FTX exchange filed for bankruptcy, more than $ 663 million worth of cryptocurrency was stolen from its wallets, according to analytics company Elliptic. Experts suspect that a significant portion of these tokens were converted into ETH, and more than a hundred different tokens worth $ 186 million were moved to the secure storage of the FTX crypto exchange itself.

Yesterday, November 15, the hacker wallet was still siphoning off digital assets from other crypto wallets linked to FTX and FTX.US. Analysts called the attack a «network spoofing» (criminal actions when a person or program disguises itself as another by falsifying data — ed.) According to Beosin, a blockchain security firm, the attacker conducted several swaps and cross-chain transactions during the day and currently holds more than $ 338 million in crypto assets.

In particular, the hacker owns 228,523 ETH worth $ 288.8 million at the current rate. This makes his «FTX Accounts Drainer» account the 35th largest holder of this cryptocurrency.

It is worth noting that the largest Ethereum whale at the moment is the Beacon Chain blockchain, with 15 million ETH on its account. In addition, most of those in the top 20 Ethereum holders are crypto exchanges, Level 2 protocols, and decentralized finance (DeFi) bridges.
