A course on cryptocurrencies and blockchain technologies can help Lebanon get out of the crisis

11:35 pm, June 28, 2022

The University of Lebanon has announced the launch of a course dedicated to blockchain technologies and investing in cryptocurrencies, which is how the country hopes to fight hyperinflation.

According to journalists, the salaries of teachers at the American University of Beirut have been reduced by about 90%, and the situation is the same in other institutions. Lebanon’s economy has suffered from corruption schemes and one of the highest hyperinflation rates in the world. Currently, banks have frozen withdrawals in dollars, leaving many customers «out of pocket».

The first semester of the new course, according to the students, was a success — they created the LebAid money transfer platform. «The course is very informative and useful, but we also need experienced programmers who can apply blockchain technologies to solve practical problems,» said Harry Halpin, one of the lecturers.

The idea of offering a course on digital assets and virtual technologies at a university is not new. Last week, the University of Cincinnati announced the launch of two study programs on cryptocurrencies, bitcoin, and new financial technologies. And the University of Arizona will issue non-fungible tokens and conduct virtual classes in the meta-universe.
