China supplies chips for cryptocurrency mining to the US despite tough sanctions

6:39 pm, July 22, 2022

Chinese bitcoin mining chip maker Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) supplies its equipment to American miners despite tough sanctions imposed by the US government.

As it became known, SMIC supplies bitcoin mining chips made using 7-nanometer technology. However, the US government blacklisted SMIC back in 2020 due to suspicions of the Chinese manufacturer’s ties to China’s military and possible information leakage. It is therefore clear that the supply of chips is illegal and could affect US security. At the time of writing, it is not known how or whether the United States plans to influence the termination of chip supplies from China.

As a reminder, U.S. diplomats are strongly committed to imposing sanctions and support other countries in this regard. Recently, the United States called on the Japanese authorities to increase pressure on cryptocurrency exchanges and miners in Japan to break any ties with Russia in order to financially isolate the terrorist state from the outside world.
