Work has begun on the creation of a blockchain for the exchange of information in space

Lockheed Martin is working with the Filecoin Foundation to develop a blockchain network in space, the organizations announced on May 23 at the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Joe Landon, vice president of advanced program development at Lockheed Martin Space, said that the project aims to develop an interplanetary file system (IPFS) in space. «We need to develop the technology to maintain a long-term presence in space without having to rely entirely on communication and data storage on Earth,» he said.

The main objective of the project is to speed up data exchange in space, because now such transmission must take place through a centralized server on Earth, which creates a few seconds of delay even when «communicating» with the Moon, which is close to us.

This year, the partners plan to decide which platform will be used as a «flying data center» and will try to conduct a test demonstration of IPFS in Earth orbit.
