Cryptocurrency will be mined on the territories of indigenous tribes in Canada
Members of the Mohawk Council of the Kahnawake Nation in partnership with Kahnawake Blockchain Technologies will launch a renewable energy mining farm in the province of Quebec. The initiative is aimed at increasing the income of reservation residents. According to media reports, the organization has requested additional capacity from the Canadian energy company Hydro Quebec, and is also negotiating the provision of energy with Pow.re.
Pow.re representative Paul Rice believes that when the project comes to fruition, its environmental impact will be negligible. The cryptocurrency mining facilities will be located on a specially prepared area and will be in shipping containers. This will also make it easier to dismantle the farm in the future, as it will be mobile. As agreed by the parties, the residents of the Kanawake Reservation will receive their share of the mining after the project is launched. Mike Delisle, Chairman of the Mohawk Council, emphasized that the launch of the farm will create a new industry in the region with zero investment — the project participants want to develop the service sector in Kanawake with the profits from mining.
Despite the requests of the residents of Canadian reserves, the topic of cryptocurrencies is on the agenda of high-ranking officials and leaders of the country in the global context. Earlier, we told you that the current Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau was skeptical of the newly elected leader of the Conservative Party, Pierre Poilievre, an ardent supporter of cryptocurrencies. The latter, in turn, vaguely promises to introduce cryptocurrencies into the country’s financial circulation if he becomes prime minister. «The government is destroying the Canadian dollar, so Canadians should have the freedom to use other money, such as bitcoin. I want to make Canada the world’s blockchain capital,» Poulievre said.
