IMF to help El Salvador calculate the efficiency of bitcoin introduction

1:09 pm, May 24, 2022

The International Monetary Fund has announced that it is providing technical assistance to the government of El Salvador. According to Jerry Rice, a spokesman for the organization, the IMF is in talks with representatives of the Salvadoran government on taxation and money laundering issues.

Although the IMF did not agree with the step El Salvador took last year to declare bitcoin legal tender, it is still in regular talks with representatives of the Salvadoran government.

«Discussions are ongoing, including assisting the government in gathering statistics on bitcoin usage and other information related to bitcoin adoption in El Salvador. We are therefore providing technical assistance on this topic,» Rice said.

The discussions take place against the backdrop of the El Salvadoran government’s desire to receive a $ 1.3 billion loan. In response, the IMF is demanding clear and transparent steps to combat money laundering, blaming bitcoin for the problems of the Salvadoran economy.
