In Russia, a cryptocurrency scammer invented a non-existent cryptocurrency, sold it and disappeared

9:29 am, September 1, 2022

In the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, police received a report of the theft of funds from a bank card. According to the victim, he wanted to buy cryptocurrency on one of the Internet sites. After the man found the seller, he immediately transferred the money to him. However, the unfortunate buyer never received the digital assets — the suspect stole the money and disappeared. The total amount of losses reached 250 thousand rubles.

The cryptocurrency offender was a 25-year-old resident of Rostov-on-Don. Law enforcement officers found that the man had no intention of selling the cryptocurrency at all and believed that he would be impossible to find. The suspect was handed a recognizance not to leave and a criminal case was opened. The victim was compensated in full.

As a reminder, the SBU recently seized a cryptocurrency wallet of a Russian citizen that was used to finance Russia’s military aggression in Ukraine.
