Major technology companies to unite to develop a common strategy for the development of metaverse
Meta, Microsoft, Unity, Sony, and more than 30 other major companies developing content for metaverse have announced that they have joined the Metaverse Standards Forum to develop a global strategy for the development of virtual reality.
According to the Metaverse Standards Forum website, one of the goals of the association is to ensure that the development of metaverse is managed jointly by the companies and there is no «dominant party». «The potential of metaversions will be best realized if they are built on the basis of open standards,» the press release emphasized.
Interestingly, many of the business giants that create much of the content for metaverse refused to join the Forum. Among them: Apple, Niantic (which developed the popular augmented reality game Pokémon Go), and Roblox Corporation.
Metaverse Standards Forum plans to hold its first meeting in July. It is not yet known whether the event will be held within a narrow circle of Forum members or whether government representatives will be invited to discuss it. After all, some governments are interested in a unified vision of metaverse development, including South Korea. Thus, the Ministry of Science of South Korea will launch a pilot project to select 4 companies producing content for metaverse. Each company will receive 200 million won ($ 160 thousand) for its developments.
