The world’s most famous cryptocurrency hackers start a war for $ 200 million
The world’s most famous cryptocurrency hackers from the Lazarus Group, who hacked the Ronin blockchain bridge in March 2022 and stole $ 625 million worth of assets from the Axie Infinity crypto project, have started a war for $ 200 million. The attackers tried to gain access to the crypto wallet of their competitor, who stole almost $ 197 million from the Euler Finance protocol, CoinDesk reported.
Euler Finance is a DeFi platform on the Ethereum blockchain that provides cryptocurrency lending services. on March 13, it was hacked. The hacker withdrew about $ 197 million in various cryptocurrencies, such as DAI, WBTC, stETH, and USDC, from the protocol.
Members of the North Korean Lazarus Group sent an online message to the hacker who broke the Euler protocol, asking him to decrypt the encrypted message. However, according to experts contacted by CoinDesk, the message was a phishing request aimed at stealing the hacker’s wallet credentials.
A few minutes after the hacker received the message, Euler Finance developers tried to intervene. «Do not attempt to view this message under any circumstances. Do not enter the private key anywhere. We remind you that your computer may also be compromised ,» the Euler team wrote in a separate transaction to the hacker. In a warning to the hacker, Euler developers also wrote that the easiest way out of the situation would be to refund the money. They are currently negotiating.
As a reminder, Lazarus Group is suspected of helping the North Korean government develop weapons of mass destruction. Rumor has it that the lion’s share of the nuclear program’s funding is made up of stolen cryptocurrency. Last year, Lazarus was also accused of hacking attacks on Israeli and Japanese crypto exchanges. Most analysts believe that crypto hacking and phishing attacks by North Korea will not stop, and the UN will respond to Pyongyang’s promising cryptocurrency and cybercrime with further sanctions.
