Trying to steal someone else’s cryptocurrency, the hacker lost his cryptocurrency tokens

10:32 am, August 24, 2022

Alex Shevchenko, CEO of Aurora Labs, has reported an attempt to steal funds from NEAR Protocol’s Rainbow Bridge: the hacker failed to get the desired funds and lost his cryptocurrency tokens.

According to Alex Shevchenko, the fraudster tried to hack the Rainbow Bridge on Saturday, August 20, hoping that the system and the Aurora Labs team would not pay attention to the project’s exploit over the weekend. The attacker tried to fake a block in the Near system, requiring a deposit of 5 ETH. The fraudster deposited the funds and tried to hack Rainbow Bridge, but in 31 seconds, the automatic protection protocol was triggered and the hacker not only failed to implement his plans but also lost 5 ETH (about $ 8000).

«Dear hacker, we are pleased to see how active you are. But if you want to do something really worthwhile, try looking for bugs for a reward,» Alex Shevchenko addressed the fraudster.

In early June, the developers of the Aurora project announced that they had paid a white hacker $ 6 million in reward for helping to prevent the theft of 70,000 ETH. In April, a white hacker contacted the blockchain representatives via the Immunefi platform to report possible problems with the project. Thanks to the timely detection of the vulnerability and quick fixes, the funds remained safe.

The actions of white hackers are legal and do no harm. They hack into systems and learn confidential information, but they do not use it for mercenary purposes.
