Scientists develop synthetic human embryos for the first time in history
Scientists have created synthetic human embryos using stem cells. According to the researchers, this eliminates the need for eggs or sperm for conception, The Guardian reports.
The researchers note that the created embryos completely mimic real ones in the early stages of development. They can provide crucial information about how genetic disorders or other factors cause miscarriages or a woman’s inability to carry a child to term.
On the other hand, this achievement raises ethical issues, as laboratory-grown embryos are not subject to any global legislation. In fact, the structures created in the laboratory do not yet have a beating heart or brain embryos. However, they contain cells that form the placenta, yolk sac, and the embryo itself.
«We now have the ability to create models similar to human embryos by reprogramming embryonic stem cells,» said Magdalena Zernicka-Getz, a professor at the University of Cambridge and the California Institute of Technology.
It is noted that in the future, synthetic embryos will not be used in clinical practice. Transplanting artificial embryos into a patient’s uterus would be illegal and risky, as it is not yet known whether synthetic models can develop further beyond the earliest stage. According to Zernitskaya-Getz, these synthetic embryos were cultivated to a stage that slightly exceeded the 14-day developmental period of a real embryo.
During this period, the embryo transforms from a continuous layer of cells into separate cell lines. At this stage of development, it does not yet have a working heart, intestines, or brain rudiments, but it does contain germ cells.
«The model we have created is the first three-line model of a human embryo, and it was created entirely from embryonic stem cells,» emphasized Zernicka-Getz.
This development demonstrated how quickly reproductive science is outpacing legislation. Scientists in different parts of the world have already started working on ethical principles that would regulate the work with synthetic embryos.
Earlier, we told you about a tech startup that proposed the concept of the world’s first factory for growing babies. Berlin biotechnologists claim that one such plant will be able to «hatch» up to 30,000 babies a year. According to the scientists, this option will allow infertile couples to conceive a child and become real biological parents of their own offspring.
