Donald Trump’s non-fungible tokens helped Polygon overtake Ethereum
According to Dune Analytics, the Polygon network managed to outsell the Ethereum network for the second month in a row, all thanks to Donald Trump. In December, 1.3 million Trump Digital Trading Cards were sold on Polygon, and in January — 1.5 million. During the same period, sales figures on the Ethereum network amounted to 995,000 and 1.1 million, respectively.
The collection of Donald Trump’s non-fungible tokens became the best selling Polygon project on OpenSea. In January, 5,517 transactions totaling 1,760 ETH (about $ 2.8 million) took place. Despite the fact that many people called the images depicting the 45th President of the United States in different guises ridiculous, they were actively bought. Thus, in January, sales of Trump’s NFTs increased by 800%. At the time, the new sales surge was attributed to information about Trump’s return to popular social networks.
Members of the cryptocurrency community called Trump’s NFT collection part of a well-thought-out strategy before the US presidential election in 2024. The politician hopes to attract the attention of Web-3 and cryptocurrency supporters by demonstrating his loyalty to technological innovations. Many users openly mock the images, which look more like comic book frames. But there were also those who admired the politician 's desire to participate in the promotion of Web3.
As for Polygon, it is the main competitor of the Solana blockchain developed by Ukrainian Anatoly Yakovenko. Some experts are convinced that the growth of the Polygon network is not really related to Trump. They believe that the main reason for the growing popularity of the blockchain is low gas prices. The network also cooperates with leading brands, including: Meta, Starbucks, and Nike.
