New Twitter functionality may increase the number of cryptocurrency frauds
Social network Twitter has started testing a new post editing feature, but experts believe that such functionality could increase the number of cryptocurrency frauds.
According to Twitter representatives, users have been interested in editing tweets since the launch of the platform. If the test is successful, everyone will be able to correct their posts within 30 minutes of publication.
However, white hacker and CEO of SocialProof Security Rachel Toback expressed her concern about the innovation. According to Toback, cryptocurrency fraudsters will be able to use the editing function. According to Rachel Toback, attackers will work according to the following scheme:
- write a scandalous post, for example, about celebrities, with information of interest to the public;
- wait 15−20 minutes for thousands of users to share it;
- edit the previous text of the tweet, adding information about the fake platform or posting a phishing link;
- receive funds from users who are interested in the previous news.
It’s worth noting that these words look like detailed instructions for action, not expressions of concern, but that’s not for us to decide.
According to Twitter representatives, the feature is launched in test mode to avoid possible troubles. «As with any new feature, we’re intentionally testing editing tweets with a limited number of users to get feedback and address potential issues,» Twitter explained.
Interestingly, the ability to edit is one of the features that billionaire Elon Musk insisted on when he planned to buy the social network. At the time of writing, it is not known how the Tesla CEO feels about the innovation in the current realities of the legal battle with Twitter.
