The UN believes that control over cryptocurrency can make the Internet safer
The Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Gada Wali, suggested that controlling the use of cryptocurrencies could partially contribute to making the Internet safer for users. During a session at the World Economic Forum, Wahli noted that the focus should be on researching the illegal use of digital assets. It is noteworthy that amid the growth of cryptocurrencies, various digital assets have been used to buy drugs and launder money.
According to the Executive Director, the first focus should be on controlling the use of cryptocurrencies at the national level of UN member states.
«There is an element of capacity building and national regulation, but there is also investigation, evidence gathering. This is a whole story about cryptocurrencies and how they are being used online in illegal ways. These are theinterventions that require a lot of investment to build capacity in the cybersecurity space,» said Wally.
In general, the UN has recognized that most jurisdictions lack laws that can address new cybercrime threats.
