Top 3 largest hacks of cryptocurrency exchanges by hackers published
Representatives of the analytical company Chainalysis confirmed that 2022 was a high-profile year in terms of significant hacks and exploits. Experts have identified three major hacks in the market this year:
FTX: $ 650 million
Perhaps this is the biggest news of 2022. In November, the company went bankrupt. The platform immediately suffered a hacker attack, during which the attacker managed to steal $ 650 million.
The stolen funds were transferred to various exchanges and converted. Interestingly, the thief was never identified. It is rumored that it was done by one of FTX’s employees, as indicated by the circumstances of the hack.
Binance: $ 566 million
In October, hackers hacked the blockchain associated with the largest marketplace Binance. At that time, the attackers stole $ 566 million in BNB coins. The exploit targets the BSC Token Hub interconnection bridge.
The attackers created tokens that were not backed by anything, using fictitious mechanisms to prove the withdrawal of funds.
However, despite the theft of significant funds, the criminals were unable to misappropriate them. According to Binance CEO Чанпен Чжао" href="https://noworries.media/biography/chanpen-chzhao/" data-bio-id="3681">Changpeng Zhao, BSC validators quickly deactivated the network, which allowed them to freeze up to 80% of the stolen assets.
Ronin: $ 552 million
In March, hackers attacked the Ronin sidechain associated with the popular Axie Infinity game. The attackers managed to steal about $ 552 million. It is quite surprising that Ronin developers noticed the theft only a week after the hack.
According to experts, the fraudsters quickly laundered the funds through cryptocurrency mixers. Later, the US Treasury Department pointed to wallet addresses that were linked to the North Korean hacker group Lazarus.
