WordPress platform sells 100-year-old domains

WordPress has started selling domains with a 100-year registration period. This means that any blog or website will exist longer than the average person will live, TechCrunch reports.

In a blog post, the firm announced that the 100-year plan is «ideal for families to preserve their online history, and for executives to document their company’s journey.»

While the promise of preserving digital assets for a century sounds promising, the service will cost $ 38,000. In exchange, WordPress will provide a domain with a 100-year registration, automatic backup of information to multiple servers and even to the Internet Archive, advanced ownership and hosting tools, and round-the-clock technical support.

«Whether it’s a special gift for a newborn — a domain and a lifelong home on the web — or something you put in your will to make sure your website and history are available for future generations, I hope this plan gets people and businesses thinking about building websites for the long term,» said WordPress CEO Matt Mullenweg.

Over the past few months, WordPress has been trying to launch new products and features to adapt to the current market environment. In March, Automattic, the owner of the platform, acquired the ActivityPub plugin to integrate blogs with Fediverse. In June, the company launched an AI writing assistant and a paid newsletter product that competes with Substack.
