US President accused of war on bitcoin cryptocurrency

1:39 pm, August 2, 2023

US presidential candidate and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has accused current US President Joe Biden of waging a war on the cryptocurrency bitcoin. DeSantis has promised to put an end to the fight that the Biden administration is waging against the flagship of the digital asset market if he is elected president, Coindesk reports.

«We want to allow Americans to invest in bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Nobody will force you to do it, but if you want to, you can invest without any obstacles,» Ron DeSantis said during a campaign event in New Hampshire.

The US presidential candidate was apparently referring to the recent charges brought by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) against the largest crypto exchanges Coinbase and Binance, according to Coindesk.

on June 5, the SEC filed a lawsuit against Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, accusing it of violating securities laws. In total, Binance Holdings Ltd., its US subsidiary, and their founder Changpeng Zhao face 13 charges.

Also, on June 6 this year, the SEC filed a lawsuit against the Coinbase crypto exchange. According to the regulator, the platform operated as an unregistered broker. The lawsuit also claimed that at least 13 tokens presented on the platform were, in fact, securities.

As for DeSantis’s rival, Robert Francis Kennedy Jr, the Democratic Party representative promised to take steps to back the US dollar with bitcoin if he is elected president. At the end of July, speaking at an event organized by Heal-the-Divide PAC, Kennedy said that backing the US dollar with a «hard currency» (gold, silver, platinum, or bitcoin) could help stabilize the US economy.
