A Bitcoin supporter heads the Conservative Party of Canada

12:05 pm, September 12, 2022

Over the weekend, the Canadian Conservatives elected a new leader — Pierre Poilievre, a cryptocurrency adherent, became the new leader. The politician won more than 68% of the Conservative vote, outpacing his closest rival, former Quebec Premier Jean Charest. Poilievre has shown ambitions to become the future Prime Minister of Canada in 2025. There is a possibility that Canadians will get the first head of government who actively advocates the introduction of bitcoin into the country’s economy.

«The government is destroying the Canadian dollar, so Canadians should have the freedom to use other money, such as bitcoin. I want to make Canada the world’s blockchain capital,» Poulievre said.

Poulievre has long been an active supporter of bitcoin, even buying a bitcoin kebab during his spring CPC leadership campaign. The politician owns at least $ 10,000 worth of cryptocurrency.

Poilievre, like most cryptocurrency enthusiasts, is not a fan of fiat currency. The politician criticizes the Central Bank of Canada for failing to curb the country’s rampant inflation. The conservative promised that during his premiership, he would dismiss the governor of the Central Bank, audit the institution, and stop the development of the Central Bank’s digital currency (CBDC). «The Bank of Canada is not developing its own digital currency. As prime minister, I would refuse to do so and instead allow the auditor general to audit their $ 400 billion money printing fiasco,» Pullière wrote on Twitter back in the spring.
