Russian hackers break into NATO website

5:37 pm, February 13, 2023

On Sunday, February 12, hackers from a terrorist state attacked the website of NATO’s Special Operations Headquarters (NSHQ). A spokeswoman for the alliance confirmed the incident and emphasized that cybersecurity is now a top priority for the agency. Interestingly, no official statements on the hacking were published on NATO’s social media pages.

The Telegraph reports that hackers from the occupying country also disrupted communication between NATO and military aircraft providing assistance to victims of the Turkish-Syrian earthquake that killed at least 28,000 people. Killnet admitted its involvement in the DDoS attacks. «We are striking at NATO,» is all the cybercriminals wrote on their Telegram channel in response to numerous reactions from social media users.

Killnet is a group of pro-Kremlin criminals who seek to disable military and government websites through cyberattacks. The hackers are targeting countries that provide military assistance to Ukraine in a full-scale war with Russia. Hacks by Russian programmers usually do not cause significant long-term damage. However, Western intelligence agencies suggest that the terrorist state may be building up its cyber capabilities for a massive digital attack in the future.

Notably, last May, British police arrested a Killnet member in London. In response, the cybercriminals threatened to shut down ventilators in British hospitals. In March 2022, shortly after the start of full-scale Russian aggression on the territory of our country, Killnet published a video in which a hooded figure with a distorted voice called on Russians «not to flee the country, but to support the homeland.»

Killnet also tried to prevent the whistleblowing cyber activities of Anonymous hackers, who attacked Russian websites and told the truth about the occupiers' atrocities in Ukraine. Killnet even boasted that they had taken down the Anonymous server, though they never proved it.

Earlier, we told you about the Trickbot hacker group that stole more than $ 720 million in cryptocurrency. Representatives of the UK’s National Cyber Security Center believe that key members of the group are receiving tasks from Russian special services.
