Fraudsters and hackers stole $ 1 billion worth of cryptocurrency in 2023

According to CertiK, in August of this year, criminals were able to steal cryptocurrency worth about $ 45 million. In total, since the beginning of the year, users have lost $ 997 million in fraudulent schemes. According to the CertiK report, in August, exit scams brought hackers $ 26 million, instant loan attacks brought $ 6.4 million, and other vulnerabilities in crypto projects allowed them to withdraw another $ 13.5 million.

The largest exit scam was the transfer and sale of $ 13.2 million worth of memecoins by the PEPE development team. DeFi Exactly Protocol ($ 7.3 million), Magnate Finance ($ 5.4 million), and other projects were also hacked.

If we count for a year, hackers managed to get $ 261 million in instant loan attacks. Another $ 596 million was stolen by hackers through various vulnerabilities, and $ 137 million was gained by the organizers of exit scams.

The total amount of losses in August was an order of magnitude lower than in July, when the volume of hacks and fraud amounted to $ 486 million. The hacking of the Multichain project alone in July brought the attackers $ 231 million.

According to South Korean intelligence, North Korean hackers managed to obtain $ 180 million worth of assets in 2023, which is almost 20% of all stolen funds.
