SBU blocks cryptocurrency wallet used to finance Russian military
The SBU has arrested a wallet that was used to finance Russia’s military aggression in Ukraine. The investigation revealed that the crypto wallet belongs to a Russian citizen who sponsors the war in Ukraine. The man calls himself a «volunteer» and has been raising money for the occupying army since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
Law enforcement officers note that the «volunteer» spent a significant part of the donations on the purchase of military equipment for the militants of the L/DNR terrorist organizations. Since February 24, 2022, he has been using social media to promote the idea of financial assistance to illegal armed groups.
The Russian has accumulated over USD 19,500 in cryptocurrency on his account. These funds were seized. The SBU was able to carry out the operation jointly with the National Police under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor General’s Office. The agencies are working to trace the funds and transfer them to Ukrainian jurisdiction.
The offender was served a notice of suspicion of financing terrorism under Article 258−5.1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — «Financing of Terrorism».
