Social networks «help» hackers steal cryptocurrency
According to security experts at Certik, most phishing attacks in 2022 were carried out by hackers via social networks Discord and Telegram, which do not have account verification functions like other communication platforms.
According to a Certik report, the number of hacker attacks aimed at stealing users' personal information and subsequent theft of their virtual assets has increased by 170% over the past 3 months. Thus, 106 attacks were recorded at the beginning of the year, and 290 attacks were recorded in the period from April to June.
Most often, fraudsters copy all the data from the accounts of well-known people and organizations (or even hack the official pages) and, impersonating one of them, encourage potential victims to click on malicious links, invest in non-existent companies and participate in «free» NFT giveaways.
According to the experts, the main problem is that users simply do not know how to distinguish truth from lies. In order to protect users' money and personal data, the updated EU code on combating disinformation will require large tech companies such as Google, Twitter, and META to counteract deepfakes and fake accounts on their platforms. Failure to take down deepfakes will be punishable by fines of up to 6% of the corporations' global turnover.
